To get more followers on Instagram in 2026, make Reels that people who don’t follow you watch to the end and send to a friend, then make your profile clear enough that they tap Follow. In January 2025, Instagram head Adam Mosseri named the three signals that matter most for ranking: watch time, likes and sends.
Most Instagram growth advice is guesswork, so this page sticks to what Instagram has said on the record, with dates. The dates matter. Since December 2025 alone, Instagram has capped hashtags at five and extended its originality rules to photos and carousels.
What Instagram says its algorithm ranks in 2026
“The top three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends,” Mosseri said in a January 2025 video. He pointed creators to the Insights version of each: average watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach. A send is a share by direct message, the paper-plane icon.
He then split them by audience. “Likes are slightly more important for connected content, and sends are slightly more important for unconnected content.” Connected means accounts that already follow you. New followers come from the unconnected side, so for growth, sends per reach is the number to move.
| Surface | What Instagram predicts or matches | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Reels | Whether you’ll reshare a reel, watch it all the way through, like it and go to the audio page | Completion and sends beat raw views |
| Feed | Whether you’ll spend a few seconds on a post, comment, like, share or tap the profile photo | Posts that hold attention for a few seconds get shown higher |
| Explore | Likes, saves and shares | Save-worthy carousels and Reels travel here |
| Search (accounts) | How closely the searched words match an account’s username or profile name | Your Name field works as a search field |
The first three rows come from Instagram’s ranking explainer (May 2023), the last from Meta’s notes on Instagram Search (updated June 2026). Comments didn’t make Mosseri’s top three, and a caption begging for them won’t rescue a Reel people quit after two seconds.
How to get more followers on Instagram with Reels
Reels are where Instagram shows accounts to people who don’t follow them yet, and Instagram tells creators they make up over 50% of time spent on the app. You fully control two things, the length and the first second.
Keep Reels to 3 minutes or less
Instagram’s creator tips say a reel must be 3 minutes or less to be recommended. Longer uploads still reach your followers, and nobody else. When Mosseri raised the Reels limit to 3 minutes in January 2025, he added: “We still are focused on short form video over long form.”
Within that limit, cut to what the idea needs. Instagram predicts whether you’ll watch a reel all the way through, and a 25-second tutorial people finish answers that better than a 90-second one with a slow middle.
Show the payoff in the first second
- Open on the result. A furniture flipper should open on the finished dresser, then cut back to the curbside find.
- Put the promise on screen as text for people watching on mute, a few words like “$15 dresser, $400 resale”.
- Cut the greeting. “Hey guys, so today…” spends your first second on nothing, and that’s the second people swipe in.
- End where it loops. A last frame that leads back into the first invites a rewatch, and rewatches add watch time.
Reels Instagram shows less
Instagram makes these less visible: low-resolution or watermarked reels, reels that are muted or have borders, reels that are mostly text, and reels already posted on Instagram. If you cross-post from TikTok, export without the watermark and re-cut the opening for Instagram. Our guide on how to get more followers on TikTok covers the TikTok side.
Instagram carousels that get saved and swiped through
Carousels win follows in Feed and Explore. Feed ranking looks at whether you spend a few seconds on a post, and Explore leans on saves and shares. A reader who swipes through eight slides and saves the post does both.
The ones that bring followers are reference posts, like a 7-step checklist, a before-and-after, a price breakdown or a “what I’d do with $500” plan. People save them, and every return visit puts your handle in front of them again.
- Slide 1 is the hook. One headline that says what the reader gets, such as “6 houseplants that survive a north window.”
- One idea per slide, in text large enough to read without zooming.
- The last slide asks for the follow with a reason. “New plant fix every Thursday” beats a bare “follow for more”.
- Use your own photos and design. Since April 30, 2026, Instagram’s originality rules cover photos and carousels as well as Reels.
Reach non-followers with Collab posts and trial reels
How Collab posts work
A Collab post is co-authored with another account. Once they accept your invite, it shows on both profiles and goes out to both sets of followers in Feed, with both names in the header. The account that starts the Collab has to be public.
Choose a partner by audience overlap. A wedding photographer and a florist in the same city fit, and so do two climbers who film at the same gym. Their followers meet you under a name they already chose to follow, which beats a cold recommendation.
Trial reels and who can use them
A trial reel is shown only to people who don’t follow you. Your followers won’t see it in Feed or the Reels tab unless you later share it to everyone, so strangers see the idea first.
As of September 2026, Instagram’s help center requires a public account with at least 200 followers if it’s professional, or 1,000 if it’s personal. Record a Reel as usual and tap Trial before you share. Insights appear within about 24 hours. With Share to everyone automatically on, Instagram posts it to your followers if it performs well in its first 72 hours.
Save trials for the Reels you’re least sure about. If you usually post B-roll with captions, try a talking-head explainer as a trial, and share it to everyone only if its average watch time beats your usual.
Instagram bio and profile keywords that turn searches into followers
Put your topic in your Name field, because Instagram Search reads it alongside your @username. “Dana Ruiz” shows up for people who already know Dana. “Dana Ruiz | Denver Wedding Photographer” can also surface for people searching “Denver wedding photographer”.
Instagram’s reach tips say the same about bios and captions. Write a caption’s first line the way someone would search it, “deadlift form for beginners”, not as a mood.
- Bio line 1: what you post and who it’s for, e.g. “Rental-friendly makeovers for small apartments”.
- Bio line 2: how often, e.g. “New room every Monday and Thursday”. It tells a visitor what following gets them.
- Pinned posts: you can pin three to the top of your grid. Pick them by follows in Insights, not by views or date.
- Top of the grid: the first rows a visitor sees should look like the Reel that brought them there.
Treat hashtags as labels. In December 2025 Instagram capped posts and Reels at five, saying fewer, more targeted hashtags “rather than many generic ones” can improve a post’s performance, and Mosseri has said hashtags don’t improve visibility. Pick two to five that describe the post, #vintagefurniture rather than #home.
How often to post on Instagram to gain followers
Two Reels and one carousel a week, batched on a Sunday, is a pace one person can hold for 90 days. That’s 39 posts over 13 weeks, enough to see which hooks and topics bring follows.
Frequency isn’t a signal in Instagram’s ranking explainer or Mosseri’s top three. Volume matters because each Reel is a new test on a new set of strangers, and most won’t travel far. Once a month, sort your posts in Insights by follows and by accounts reached, and drop the formats at the bottom of both lists.
Habits that protect your reach
- Post original work. Instagram judges originality over a 30-day window, and an account whose recent posts are mostly someone else’s stops being recommended until that changes. Instagram says 75% of its US recommendations now come from original posts.
- Check Account Status in Settings and activity. It shows whether your content is eligible to be recommended to non-followers.
- Skip follow/unfollow and engagement pods. Instagram’s spam rules name repetitive comments and artificially collected follows, and neither produces the watch time or sends that ranking uses.
- Look after the fans you have. Instagram suggests asking your top fans to add you to their Favorites, which puts your posts higher in their Feed.
Where buying Instagram followers fits
Buying followers helps at one moment, when a stranger lands on your profile and glances at the count. A new running club’s account with 38 followers looks like three friends. At 1,200 it looks like a club worth showing up to on Saturday. Bought followers add no watch time or sends, so the Reels still have to do the rest.
It isn’t illegal, but it goes against Instagram’s terms. The Community Guidelines ask people not to artificially collect likes, followers or shares, and Instagram has removed inauthentic follows since a November 2018 crackdown on third-party apps. Expect some of the count to slip. Restrictions on the account itself don’t happen often, and when they do, it’s Instagram’s call, not the seller’s.
If you decide it’s worth it, Socialbot’s Instagram followers need only your @handle. They start within 1 hour and arrive at up to 10,000 a day, and if the count drops within 30 days we top it back up. Turn off “Flag for review” first, or Instagram holds the follows as requests. Starter monthly ($44.99) includes 1,000 followers every 30 days, and the one-time $4 trial includes 100 over 12 hours.
