How many followers on TikTok to go live, plus the age and account rules

TikTok’s Help Center article “What is TikTok LIVE?” sets the number at 1,000 followers and pairs it with an age rule and an account-standing rule.

The age rule used to be 16. TikTok raised it to 18 on November 23, 2022, so any guide that still says 16 is out of date.

The regional caveat is real but vague. TikTok’s LIVE Studio FAQ says access requirements “may vary depending on your country/region,” and the Help Center notes that LIVE and Gifts aren’t offered everywhere. Neither page says who gets LIVE early, so don’t schedule a first stream around it.

How to check if your TikTok account has LIVE access

Open LIVE in the app’s camera. You’ll get either a Go LIVE button or a list of what you’re missing.

1. Open TikTok and tap the + (Add post) button at the bottom of the screen.
2. Swipe across the modes at the bottom until you reach LIVE.
3. If you see a title field and a Go LIVE button, you have access. You can back out without streaming.
4. If you see Get access to go LIVE, tap it. TikTok shows any unmet requirements in gray at the top of the screen.
5. Once you meet them, come back to the same screen and apply again.

If nothing shows in gray and LIVE still won’t start, work through these from the top.

• Update the app and open the LIVE screen again.
• Look in your inbox and in LIVE Center for violation notices. A LIVE suspension blocks streaming until it ends or an appeal succeeds, and TikTok says appeal results come within 24 hours.
• Finish the age check if TikTok asked for one and you skipped it. An unconfirmed age keeps LIVE off.
• Report it: Profile, then the three-line menu, Settings and privacy, Report a problem, and pick a topic.

How to go live on TikTok from your phone

Once you have access, a LIVE from the app is four taps, per TikTok’s Help Center.

1. Tap Add post (+) at the bottom.
2. Tap LIVE at the bottom. You may need to scroll across to find it.
3. Add a title, pick any LIVE tools and adjust your settings, including whether LIVE Gifts is on.
4. Tap Go LIVE.

Mid-stream, tap More (…) and then Settings to change tools. To finish, tap End LIVE at the top, then End now.

Prep that shapes the first ten minutes

Take a 1,200-follower account that posts 30-second guitar covers. At 5 pm it posts a clip saying it’ll be LIVE at 7 taking song requests. The LIVE title reads “Taking requests, any decade,” and the guitar is tuned with a request list open before Go LIVE. Viewers who arrive at 7 came for requests, and anyone who lands mid-stream reads the title and knows what to type.

How to go live on TikTok from a computer with LIVE Studio

On a computer you stream through LIVE Studio, TikTok’s own app for 64-bit Windows 10 or newer. It has its own follower rule, separate from LIVE on your phone.

TikTok’s LIVE Creator Hub (an article from September 2024) puts LIVE Studio at 1,000 followers for gaming creators, meaning accounts that have posted game videos or streamed game content, and 10,000 followers for everyone else. Creators who already stream regularly elsewhere can apply below those numbers through a form, though TikTok says some accounts can’t apply for security reasons.

1. Download LIVE Studio from TikTok’s Studio download page and install it.
2. Open it and log in with your TikTok account.
3. If you meet the requirements, click Get access to go LIVE. If not, the unmet ones show in gray at the top, and you can reapply once you meet them.
4. Add your camera, microphone and the game or window you’re sharing to the scene. The audio mixer is the middle box along the bottom of the window.
5. Start the LIVE from the app. Comments, Gifts and new followers show up in LIVE Studio as they happen.

If your access is a trial, TikTok’s LIVE Studio FAQ says you must stream at least 25 minutes, twice in your first week, or lose it. If you already stream with OBS, TikTok says it doesn’t change your traffic based on which of the two you use.

The minimum hardware TikTok lists is an Intel Core i3 9th Gen or AMD Ryzen 5 3000-series processor, NVIDIA GTX 10-series or AMD Radeon graphics, 8 GB of RAM, 1 GB of free space and DirectX 11.

What changes at 18 on TikTok LIVE: Gifts and Diamonds

At 18 you can host a LIVE and switch on LIVE Gifts, the feature that pays you for streaming. Under 18, no follower count gets you a LIVE.

Viewers buy Coins, spend them on virtual Gifts that appear on your screen, and TikTok awards you Diamonds “based on the popularity of your LIVE.” The LIVE summary at the end of each stream shows how many you collected.

To turn on LIVE Gifts, TikTok requires that you:

• live somewhere LIVE Gifts is available
• are 18 or older (19 in South Korea)
• are eligible to go LIVE, which brings the 1,000-follower rule back in
• have an account in good standing under the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service

Government, politician and political party accounts can’t collect Diamonds. To switch Gifts on or off, tap Settings on the LIVE screen before you start and toggle LIVE Gifts.

How TikTok confirms you’re 18

TikTok can ask for proof of age when you start a LIVE. Depending on your country, the options are:

• photos of a government ID plus three selfies
• a selfie with ID through a partner called Incode
• a small temporary card authorization that gets refunded
• facial age estimation from a selfie taken on the spot

TikTok may skip the check based on your location or if you’ve passed it before. If it can’t confirm your age, LIVE stays off. Followers, bought or earned, don’t change that.

How to reach 1,000 TikTok followers before your first LIVE

Post short versions of the LIVE you plan to run. Followers who come for one specific thing are the ones who show up when you stream it.

• Post the stream in miniature. If you plan to paint miniatures on LIVE, post 20-second clips of one brush technique each. Every video is an audition for the stream.
• Name your first LIVE now. End videos with the plan, such as “At 1,000 I’m painting a full squad LIVE, start to finish.” It gives a viewer a reason to follow today.
• Post in the slot you plan to stream. If you want Thursday nights at 9, post around 9 on other nights, so the people meeting you are already on the app at that hour.
• Track which days bring followers, not views. TikTok’s analytics show your follower count day by day. Match the jumps to what you posted and make more of that format, even if another video outdrew it.

Do the arithmetic before you pick a tactic. An account at 820 followers gaining 15 a day reaches 1,000 in 12 days. At 3 a day it needs two months, and that’s the signal to change the format rather than post more of the same.
